Home economics Dean Ava Bertha Milam was born on November 27, 1884 in Macon Missouri, one of 5 daughters of Ancil and Louisa Milam. She taught at the Blees Military Academy from 1904 to 1907 and came to Oregon Agricultural College in 1911 as professor and head of the Department of Foods and Nutrition. She was appointed Dean of the School of Home Economics in 1917 and served in that capacity until her retirement in 1950. The College of Home Economics at Oregon State University was established in 1889 as the Department of Household Economy and Hygiene and was the first such program west of the Rocky Mountains. The College merged with the College of Health and Human Performance in 2002 to form the College of Health and Human Sciences.
